WHAT IS A HARMONIUM
What is a harmonium and how are they made?
A Harmonium is an air musical instrument that was created in Europe in the 1800’s. It looks like a little piano but the sound is produced by pumping air into a closed chamber that has a single reed for each of the notes and when the air passes through them they vibrate and make the sound. Although the first Harmoniums in Europe were foot-pumped, when they arrived in India, they were readapted to be pumped with one hand, giving birth to the Indian version of the Harmonium which is the one that has popularized nowadays all over the World. They are basically handmade by expert artisans, who have learned this art generation after generation. They first make the body out of wood and then they put each key to set up the whole keyboard and then place the reeds according to each individual sound. In the Vasis factory, we used the best Teak wood from the area and first quality Indian or English reeds.
